It’s a Book, it’s a Chance, it’s a Times New Romance
Independent Publishing Fair
Leipzig, 19th of March, 2016
‚It’s a Book‘ is an independent publishing fair taking place on 19th of March 2016. The fair will be hosted at the Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig, simultaneously taking place with the official Leipzig Book Fair held at the Leipzig Messe.
Practitioners from the international independent publishing scene look forward to meeting with visitors interested in exchanging books and ideas.
Originally initiated by Leipzig based publishing house Spector Books in 2010, the organization and management of the fair was handed over to the students from the graphic design department of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig three years ago.
‘It’s a Book’ showcases 40 publishing houses and around 20 student projects.
We welcome self-initiated book and graduation projects, especially related to graphic design and bookmaking as well as young authors who are looking for publishing partners.
A number of participants will be offered the chance to present their work at ‘It’s a Book’.
The submission deadline is February 29th, 2016.

This year‘s symposium is titled ‚It’s a Book, it’s a Chance, it’s a Times New Romance.‘
The disappearance of conventional printing shops has become a recent indication of a very distinct diagnosable change related to the expanded fields graphic design and book publishing.
Printing technologies will not disappear, but their meaning will inevitably shift. After a period of mainstream growth, catalyzed by the upward trend in producing paperbacks since the 1960s, it seems now that the surplus value of the photo books produced today is contained primarily within their material qualities. Will books transform purely into objects of luxury and speculation?
The event seeks to showcase a chronology of graphical and medial inventions and the history of visual cognition and to demonstrate the democratization of the knowledge network underlining these constructs.
How do analog formats mutate under the impact of digital publishing?
Likewise, the equivalent developments within the production and distribution of music, film, journalism, and the sciences will also be traced.
Is it worthwhile to manage the new tasks of today’s information society using old tools or must we find new jobs for old media?
