SYMPOSIUM
This year‘s symposium is titled ‚It’s a Book, it’s a Chance, it’s a Times New Romance.‘
The disappearance of conventional printing shops has become a recent indication of a very distinct diagnosable change related to the expanded fields graphic design and book publishing.
Printing technologies will not disappear, but their meaning will inevitably shift. After a period of mainstream growth, catalyzed by the upward trend in producing paperbacks since the 1960s, it seems now that the surplus value of the photo books produced today is contained primarily within their material qualities. Will books transform purely into objects of luxury and speculation?

The event seeks to showcase a chronology of graphical and medial inventions and the history of visual cognition and to demonstrate the democratization of the knowledge network underlining these constructs.
How do analog formats mutate under the impact of digital publishing?
Likewise, the equivalent developments within the production and distribution of music, film, journalism, and the sciences will also be traced.
Is it worthwhile to manage the new tasks of today’s information society using old tools or must we find new jobs for old media?

Speakers and presentations confirmed for ‘It’s a Book’:
Experimental Jetset, Amsterdam
Christoph Knoth, Berlin
